Talk to Laura

The hardest part of learning English isn't the grammar. It's finding somebody patient enough to let you be slow, be wrong, and try the sentence again — at eleven at night, on a Tuesday, for the twentieth time.

So we built one. Speak English out loud with Laura whenever you like, and find out afterwards what to fix.

Laura

First, the honest bit

This is not Laura sitting at her desk. It is a computer that has been taught to teach the way she does, and given her voice with her permission. She wrote the lessons, and she reads every bit of feedback it gives.

What's real is the practice. You speak English out loud, something listens properly and answers, and you find out what to fix. If you want the actual Laura — and for some things you should — she and Bez still teach one to one.

How it works

Two doors, and you pick

I just want to talk

Open conversation

Pick anything — your job, your weekend, an argument you had in English and lost. Laura talks back, keeps it going when you get stuck, and tells you afterwards what she noticed.

I'd like a structured lesson

Proper lessons, in order

Work through Laura's lessons one at a time, with lines to practise out loud and your pronunciation checked as you go. She remembers where you got to.

  1. Press the button and speak

In your browser. No app to install, no microphone to set up.

  2. Laura answers, out loud

In her own voice, at a speed you can follow, and she waits for you.

  3. You find out what to fix

Grammar, the words you chose, and how you said them — at the end, not mid-sentence.

What you get that a video can't give you

  • Your turn to speak. A video never waits for you.
  • Being corrected kindly. Not in front of a class.
  • Pronunciation checked word by word, so you know which sound is wrong.
  • No appointment. Ten minutes before work counts.
  • A teacher who remembers you and what you were working on last time.

Written practice costs half a credit a minute, so credits go further when nobody is speaking. Credits renew at the start of each month and don't roll over. Top-ups are there if you run out.

Questions people ask

Do I need a microphone?

Whatever your laptop or phone already has is fine. Your browser will ask permission the first time.

What if my English isn't good enough yet?

Then this is exactly the point. Laura slows down, waits, and says it another way. Nobody else is listening.

Is my voice recorded?

What you say is turned into text so Laura can answer it, and the text of the lesson is kept so she remembers where you got to. You can delete all of it from your account page, whenever you like. The full version is here.

Can children use it?

Under-16s need a parent or guardian to agree first — we email them a link and nothing starts until they've clicked it.

Is this instead of lessons with Laura?

No. It's for the practice between them — the daily half hour that makes the real lesson worth more. Laura and Bez both still teach one to one.
